Deck Builders Who Work the Way You Want to Work
We build custom decks for homeowners and businesses throughout Charlottesville and the surrounding region. Every project is different — some clients arrive with detailed plans and specific materials in mind, others know roughly what they want but need help working through the design. Both approaches work fine with us.
What we’re not is a company that quotes from a price sheet and shows up with a prefabricated result. We spend time on the front end making sure the deck we build is the one you actually want — the right size, the right materials, the right connection to the rest of your property. Then we build it carefully and stand behind the work.
Deck Services for Every Project
From a new deck on a tight residential lot to a large commercial platform, we handle projects of all sizes. Every job starts with a real conversation about what you need and an honest assessment of what it will take.
Deck Building & New Construction
We design and build custom decks from the ground up — working with you on size, materials, layout, railing style, and how the deck connects to your home and yard.

Deck Repair & Restoration
Rotting boards, loose railings, failing joists — we assess what’s actually wrong and give you an honest answer about whether repair or replacement makes more sense.

Composite Decking
We work with leading composite brands and can walk you through the differences so you pick the product that fits your situation — not just the one on sale.

Pergolas & Shade Structures
A pergola changes how a deck feels and how often it gets used. We build freestanding and attached pergolas in a range of materials to suit your space and budget.

Screened Porches & Enclosures
Virginia summers mean insects. We build screened porches that feel like a natural extension of the house — properly framed and finished to the same standard as the rest of your home.

Multi-Level & Pool Decks
Multi-level decks work well on sloped properties common in the Charlottesville area. Pool decks require specific attention to drainage and material selection given constant water exposure.

What Happens When You Call Us
A lot of deck companies operate the same way: a salesperson shows you a catalog, and a crew shows up sometime later. We work differently. The person you talk to at the start is involved throughout. There’s no handoff to a crew hearing about the project for the first time on installation day.
We take time up front to understand the project before we quote it — which means the deck we propose actually fits the site conditions, the budget, and what you want to do with the space.
We meet at the site, walk the space, and talk through what you want. No pressure, no catalog.
A written proposal with material options, clear scope of work, and a firm price before you commit.
We handle the build start to finish and keep you updated throughout. No surprises.
We walk the finished deck with you. If something isn’t right, we take care of it before closing the job.
We Work With the Material That Fits Your Project
There’s no single right answer for deck materials. The best choice depends on your budget, how much maintenance you want to do, and what you want the deck to look like in ten years. We’ve worked with all of these and can give you an honest read on each one.
Pressure Treated Lumber
The most affordable option and still one of the most common. It holds up well when properly maintained and is a practical choice for clients who want a natural wood look at a reasonable cost.
Composite Decking
Today’s composite boards require minimal maintenance and handle Virginia’s climate well. The upfront cost is higher, but many homeowners find the reduced maintenance makes that difference worthwhile over time.
Cedar
Naturally resistant to rot and insects. Cedar has a look that’s hard to replicate with composite and ages gracefully when maintained. If you want a wood deck that genuinely looks good, cedar is worth the cost difference.
Hardwood Decking
Ipe, tigerwood, and other tropical hardwoods are exceptionally dense and durable. At the high end of the cost range, but a well-built hardwood deck can last decades and develops character over time that manufactured materials can’t match.
PVC & Capped Composite
The highest level of moisture resistance and lowest maintenance requirements of any deck board. Works especially well around pools and in high-moisture areas. The material won’t absorb water, stain, or fade the way earlier composites could.
Aluminum Framing
Aluminum joists and beams won’t rot, warp, or be affected by insects. They cost more than lumber framing upfront but eliminate the most common source of long-term deck problems. We offer aluminum framing as an option on any build.
What Makes Working With Us Different
We could list the usual things — experience, quality, customer service. Instead, here’s how we actually operate.
- Written proposal with a firm price before any work starts — if something changes during the build, we tell you before we do it
- Every project is custom — designed around your specific property, site conditions, and goals
- We work with a wide range of materials and give you an honest comparison — not a push toward whichever has the best margin for us
- Residential and commercial throughout Charlottesville and the surrounding region — project size doesn’t change how carefully we work
- Communication throughout the build is part of the job — you won’t be left wondering what’s happening or when the crew is showing up
The Structural Work You Don’t See
Most of what determines a deck’s long-term performance is hidden once the boards are down. We pay as much attention to the structural work as we do to the visible finish.
Proper Footings
Most deck problems trace back to footings not sized or placed correctly. We assess soil conditions and local frost depth and build the foundation to match — it’s where long-term performance is really determined.
Ledger Attachment
Where the deck attaches to the house is the most structurally critical connection on any attached deck. It needs to be flashed correctly to prevent water intrusion and fastened with hardware rated for the application.
Material Compatibility
Mixing materials without understanding how they interact is a common mistake. Fasteners, framing lumber, and decking boards need to work together. Pressure-treated wood requires specific fastener coatings. Composite boards have expansion gaps that wood doesn’t. We account for all of it.
Railing Integrity
Railings are safety structures, not decorative trim. A railing that feels wobbly is a problem regardless of how it looks. Post placement, attachment method, and baluster spacing all get the attention they require.
Drainage & Water Management
Water is the main enemy of any deck. We design for proper drainage from the start — appropriate board gaps, correct slope where needed, and attention to how water moves off the surface and away from the house.
Clean Finish Work
The difference between a professionally built deck and one that isn’t often comes down to finish details — consistent spacing, straight lines, clean cuts at transitions. These aren’t structural issues, but they’re what you notice every time you use the deck.
Decks We’ve Built, Clients We’ve Worked With
We’ve built decks throughout Charlottesville, Crozet, Waynesboro, Staunton, and across central Virginia.
“We had a clear idea of what we wanted but needed help making it work on a sloped lot. They came out, looked at the site, and came back with a plan that addressed all the challenges we hadn’t fully thought through. The finished deck is exactly what we had in mind.”
“The pricing was transparent from the start. They gave us a written proposal with a clear breakdown, and the final number matched what we were told at the beginning. That level of straightforwardness is harder to find than it should be.”
“We went back and forth on composite versus pressure-treated for a while. They spent real time walking us through the differences — not pushing one over the other, just explaining what we were actually choosing between. That kind of honest advice made the decision easy.”
Serving Charlottesville and Central Virginia
We’re based in Charlottesville and build decks throughout a wide area of central Virginia — an approximately one-hour radius from downtown, taking in communities from Waynesboro and Staunton to the west, Culpeper and Orange to the north, Lynchburg to the south, and Richmond and Fredericksburg to the east.
We work in each of these areas regularly and understand the permit requirements, site conditions, and terrain that come with building in different parts of the region.
Questions We Hear Before Most Projects Start
If your question isn’t here, just reach out and we’ll give you a straight answer.
Deck cost varies too much to give a meaningful number without knowing the specifics of your project. Size, material choice, site conditions, design complexity, and permit requirements all affect the final price. What we do is come out, look at the site, and give you a firm written price before any work starts. That consultation is free with no obligation.
Virginia’s climate — hot humid summers, cold winters, and significant rainfall — is demanding on deck materials. Pressure-treated lumber works well when properly maintained. Composite and capped composite materials are a strong choice for lower maintenance. Cedar holds up beautifully with periodic care. We’ll walk you through the trade-offs at your consultation based on your budget and how much upkeep you’re willing to do.
In most cases, yes. Charlottesville and surrounding counties typically require permits for decks above a certain size or height, and for any deck attached to the house. Requirements vary by jurisdiction. We handle the permit process as part of every build and know the requirements for the areas we work in regularly.
Active construction on a straightforward residential deck typically takes one to two weeks once materials are on site and permits are in hand. Larger or more complex builds take longer. We give you a realistic timeline at the proposal stage so you can plan accordingly.
Yes. We build decks and outdoor platforms for restaurants, hotels, event venues, multi-family properties, and commercial clients throughout the Charlottesville area. Commercial builds involve different code requirements, higher load specifications, and tighter scheduling. We’re set up for it and take the same approach as residential: a thorough assessment, a clear proposal, and a build that matches what was agreed.
Yes. Sloped lots are common in the Charlottesville area and we build on them regularly. Sloped sites often require elevated framing, longer posts, and more careful footing placement. Multi-level designs can work well on sloped sites because they follow the terrain rather than fighting it. Our on-site assessment is designed specifically to understand these conditions before we propose anything.
